Platón quería expulsar de la República la literatura de imaginación y en el siglo de oro estuvo a punto de lograrlo. El incremento de los lectores de obras de ficción favorecido por la imprenta dio pie a críticas y diatribas. Platón había enseñado que la literatura es falsa por definición, precisamente porque no consiste en una instancia de la realidad, sino en una mera imitación. Pensadores y moralistas insistían, por otro lado, en los efectos nefastos que podía provocar en los lectores. El autor examina aquí esas censuras así como las respuestas que se les opusieron, tanto en la teoría como en la práctica. |
