Summary, etc. During the conduct of this analysis, the reader will come to face problems of formal rhetoric, to analyze prose using the methods of inductive and deductive logic, and to explore the structure of the English sentence under the guidance of modern linguistic techniques of descriptions. Prose selections used by Sheridan in her own rhetoric classes. Three criteria determined the choice and arrangement of selections: that the selections be representative of the historical development of English prose style, that the thematic groupings be available for analyses of the different ways in which similar subjects can be expressed, and that the chief problems of student writers be liberally represented in a variety of resolutions. These chief problems are grouped under Coherence understood as systems of organization that stablish the relationship of ideas from paragraph to paragraph within the large structure of an essay and from sentence to sentence within paragraph; and Influence coincidental with the definition of rhetoric as the art of persuation and so is obviously connected with the forms of argumentation.
