Comienza en los momentos en que la invasión francesa de 1808 pone al descubierto la irremediable fragilidad del estado de la monarquía absoluta, y abre el proceso revolucionario encaminado a reemplazarlo, y concluye en 1833, al iniciarse la fase final de transición a la sociedad burguesa. En definitiva, es un estudio preliminar, donde se sintetizan las líneas generales del período abarcado y se discuten los problemas más importantes.
