A partir de un análisis del carácter general del modo de producción esclavista se comparan las estructuras sociales y políticas de las sociedades griega, helenística y romana. Las razones de la caída del sistema imperial romano, que pone fin a la Antigüedad, se examinan a la luz de las divisiones regionales dentro del Imperio y de la evolución de las tribus germánicas en sus fronteras. Tras una panorámica de la Edad Oscura, que cubre los siglos V-VIII, el autor traza un cuadro de la aparición en Europa occidental del feudalismo en cuanto nuevo modo de producción, para comparar las diferentes formaciones sociales feudales del Occidente medieval y estudiar la especial evolución de Escandinavia. Se examinan después las causas del notable crecimiento (y de la crisis final) de la economía feudal de Occidente. Por último, el autor esboza el específico patrón de desarrollo de Europa oriental en la época medieval, ponderando la significación de las invasiones de nómadas asiáticos en esta mitad de Europa. La obra cierra con una reflexión sobre el carácter y la trayectoria del Imperio Bizantino, cuya desaparición marca tradicionalmente el comienzo de la Edad Moderna en Europa. |
