Lleva estudio preliminar de una de las mayores autoridades en cuestiones sarmientinas: el Dr. Alberto Palcos, cuyo libro sobre el prócer marcó una época en la bibliografía argentina. Como nota singular, se incluye la libreta de gastos de viaje de Sarmiento: otra muestra de aquella personalidad tan curiosa y tan humana. La ortografía ha sido modernizada para esta edición; las modificaciones quedan señaladas entre corchetes.
