And the other stories reveal more of his facets, each one bright with the author's vivid perceptions of all the interacting, shifting levels of sensitive and articulate society. For James the whole world of Americans, Cockneys, upper-class snobs, writers, dilettanti, journalists, intriguers, youths gave him the opportunity to indulge his greatest obsession: observation.
