Born in New York in 1888, he brought to it a depth and intensity, and a willingness to experiment, which were valuable precedents for its further development. The early plays in this volume (The Emperor Jones, The Hairy Ape, All God's Chillum, Got Wings) belong to a period of expressionist experiment, which was crowned by the tremendous achievement of Desire Under the Elms. Ah, Wilderness! marks the end of the first major period of O'Neill's creative life. |
