Desde esta perspectiva fueron incorporados 57 artículos, cada uno de los cuales, dedicado a un tema claramente delimitado, constituye un todo y puede ser objeto de una lectura autónoma. En el interior de dichos artículos se ofrecen alrededor de 800 definiciones fácilmente ubicables gracias al índice final y al índice de autores. A su vez está dividido en cuatro secciones: Las escuelas: desde el siglo XVII hasta Chomsky; los dominios: incluyendo la psico y sociolingüística; los conceptos metodológicos: desde el signo hasta los géneros literarios; los conceptos descriptivos: desde las unidades no significativas hasta los más complejos acerca del lenguaje y la acción.
