Variations on a Theme offers something entirely new for listening practice at intermediate and more advanced levels: sets of short dialogues built around a common language function, designed for interpretation and discussion and leading to an optional production stage. The dialogues incorporate many of the features of authentic speech, and the questions shift attention from the usual concentration on literal comprehension to the interpretation of those linguistic and other features which native speakers are able to interpret instinctively but which usually escape even advanced students.
