Resumen: This novel is one of the few jamesian's set in his native land; its style is direct and economical; it's plot-centering upon an heiress favored by neither beauty nor brilliance, her proud and pitiless father, her fortune hunter suitor- has the simplicity of a classic drama. Henry James portrays the shifting relationships of his characters through a series of confrontations and self-revelations. And from this depiction there emerges a view of love and cruelty innocence and treachery, singularly shaped by his intense moral vision.
