They describe the goals, scope and findings of the various enquiries into the nature of language, in order to identify what is relevant to the practical problems of language teaching. A short introductory chapter fits the two approaches to applied linguistics: the practical approach followed in volume 3 and the theoretical approach followed in volume 2, into a general conspectus of applied linguistics in language teaching. Chapters 2-5 give an account of the main concepts of theoretical linguistics, while chapters 6-8 are concerned with the sociological and psychological approaches to language and their relevance to language teaching.
