The development of industrial capitalism in Victorian Britain had a profund effect on constructions of femininity and female sexuality. This work offers an analysis of representations which defined and regulated women in the period. Ideas of normal and deviant behaviour are shown to have been produced through legal, religious and medical texts and through cultural forms such as painting and literature. This book examines the role of culture in the formation of broad political issues such as class, gender and national identity.
