Resumen: The eight papers in this volume make original contributions on the fundamental issues of applied linguistics. They describe the goals, scope and findings of the various enquiries into the nature of language, in order to identify what is relevant to the practical problems of language teaching. A short introductory chapter fits the two approaches to applied linguistics: the practical approach followed in volume 3 and the theoretical approach followed in volume 2, into a general conspectus of applied linguistics in language teaching. Chapters 2-5 give an account of the main concepts of theoretical linguistics, while chapters 6-8 are concerned with the sociological and psychological approaches to language and their relevance to language teaching.
